The BBC Trust had erstwhile occupied shared offices in the BBC building, along with the other departments. However, after the corporation sold the office spaces, the Trust decided it was best to move away and maintain a separate office, especially if it wanted to maintain autonomy. Therefore, the BBC Trust refused to accept the office space offered by the BBC within its building.

However, this move of the BBC Trust, especially related to the high investment made into the lease as well as renovation is being questioned by all, especially given the uncertainty of its continuance as a regulatory body. In fact, there have been rumours that the Tories are dead against this regulatory body and would love to dismantle it, when in power.

Similarly, the culture secretary, Ben Bradshaw, calling it the cheerleader for the BBC, said that the additional spending of the Trust for renovation will be questioned and criticised by all, once they read the report of the National Audit Office.

According to Jeremy Hunt, shadow culture secretary, it is unbelievable that a regulatory body, whose chief duty is to ensure that money is not spent unnecessarily and that all departments get value for money, would spend so much on its new office space. What is unbelievable is the fact that this Trust has done nothing to ensure the completion of a £20m project, running late by nearly 2 years.

Office leasing company Regus, which leases outsourced office space, has reported a nearly 10% jump in its revenues, to ₤557 million, for the first half of the year. The company says this recession-beating achievement is a result of its focus on the flexible office market for start-ups.

The company says that as a result of the current recession, a number of employees in the city had been laid off. These people have put to use their creativity in setting up their own ventures. Regus chose to target this market which was looking at low priced flexible office options. Their most popular deal has been the five-day, ₤70 ‘recession-busting’ lease for office space.

This has helped the company beat the downward trend of lower occupancy levels, as more and more start-up ventures were interested in their offers. Company founder and CEO Mark Dixon stated that by tapping into this market, the company managed to ensure that occupancy levels remained fairly stable. The strategy appears to have worked, for even though Regus’ profits for the period dropped nearly 11%, it has added space available to these clients steadily over the period, backed by an increasing demand for such flexible leasing terms.

Regus’ offers have been very popular as the small office spaces in the city are available at almost half of what they would normally cost, and with short term leasing periods that help a company get its act off the ground. Many companies are now trying to maximise office space, a solution has been to provide desk space rental and shared offices, and many firms to fill vacant office spaces have welcomed this.

Dixon is of the view that the trend in letting is on a recovery, a point echoed by Derwent London’s head John Burns, who sees a recovery in the near future.
