Puppies are eager and willing to do the right thing. They love your happy face and the squealy noises you make when they have done something great. They will do ANYthing to please you because of the loving rewards they get from being a Good Dog. They just cannot get enough of your praises and cuddles.

Moving towards “What a good dog!” from “Bad Puppy!” is based on one thing. Your puppy does not know the English language, and the faster he learns it, the better for all, because the minute he knows what you want he will DO it. Make it faster and easier for him to learn by keeping these tips in mind:

1. Be consistent in the words you choose to teach him commands. If you say, “Wanna go potty?” in the morning, and “Have to go out?” two hours later, and “Wanna go pee?” two hours later, etc., then that is THREE phrases you have asked him to learn in one day instead of only one. Decide which words to use, and make sure everyone in your family uses the same ones.

2. Use his name in the command if you want action, do NOT use it if you want him restricted from action. This is very important. Hearing his own name makes a puppy leap into action by his very nature. When you want your puppy to come, say, “Puppy, Come!” [insert his name instead of the word Puppy, of course] When you want him to lie down, simply say, “Down”.

3. Do not confuse your puppy with the same words for different commands. If you are teaching him basic obedience, the word “Down” means LIE down, usually followed by “Stay.” If you don’t want him on the couch, do not say “Down”, say, “Off.” This word can be used to keep him from jumping up into your lap, onto the couch, chair or bed because it is the ACTION of jumping up you are trying to restrict. Saying “Down” when he jumps onto the couch will just make him lie down on the couch! See the difference?

3. Do not ever hit your puppy, you dont need to. The worst punishment he ever needs to learn a lesson is your sad frown and walking away from him. One or two minutes is the limit though, do not overdo this. After a minute of ignoring him, give a command he knows well and praise praise praise, with a big smile.

These three tips, used with gentleness and consistency, will teach your puppy all the words he needs to know to be a happy and obedient companion in a matter of days.

The best house training uses the dogs own instincts to avoid
soiling its bed to train the dog where and where not to
eliminate. That is the basis behind crate training, in which the
dog is confined to its crate in the absence of the owner, and
den training, in which the dog is confined to a small area of
the home.

In essence, the crate, or the room, becomes the dog’s den. Dogs
are naturally very clean animals, and they try their best to
avoid using their dens as toilets.

This type of training usually works very well, both for puppies
and for older dogs. Problems with this type of toilet training
are usually the result of not understanding the signals the dog
is sending, not being consistent with feeding times, or trying
to rush the process.

While the house training process can be sped up somewhat by
consistently praising the dog and rewarding it for toileting in
the proper place, some dogs cannot be rushed through this
important process. It is always best to house train the dog
properly the first time than to go back and retrain a problem
dog.

If the dog continues to soil the den area after house training,
the most likely reason is that the owner has left the dog in the
den for too long. Another reason may be that the den area is too
large. In this case, the best strategy is to make the den area
smaller or to take the dog to the toilet area more frequently.

If the dog soils the bed that has been provided in the den area,
it is most likely because the owner has left the dog there for
too long, and the dog had an understandable accident. Or it
could be that the dog has not yet adopted this area as the bed.
In addition, urinary tract infections and other medical
conditions can also cause dogs to soil their beds. It is
important to have the dog thoroughly checked out by a
veterinarian to rule out any medical problems.

One other reason for house training accidents that many people
overlook is boredom. Dogs who are bored often drink large
amounts of water and therefore must urinate more frequently than
you might think. If you notice your dog consuming large amounts
of water, be sure to take the dog to the established toilet area
more often, and provide the dog with toys and other distractions
to eliminate boredom.

Boredom is the root cause of many dog behavior problems, not
only house training issues. Chewing and other destructive
behaviors are also often caused by boredom and separation
anxiety.

Other problems with house training can occur when the dog’s den
is not properly introduced. In some cases dogs can react to the
den as if it is a prison or a punishment. Those dogs may exhibit
signs of anxiety, such as whining, chewing and excessive
barking. It is important for the dog to feel secure in its den,
and to think of it as a home and not a cage.

The best way to house train a puppy or dog, or to re-house train
a problem dog, is to make yourself aware of the dog’s habits and
needs. Creating a healthy, safe sleeping and play area for your
dog, as well as a well defined toilet area, is important for any
house training program.

House training is not always an easy process, but it is
certainly an important one. The number one reason that dogs are
surrendered to animal shelters is problems with inappropriate
elimination, so a well structured house training program can
literally be a lifesaver for your dog.

Eating is one of the most primal activities for dogs. They love it, and they have respect for whoever gives them food (the leader in the pack). You can use your “power” of being pack leader to enhance your dog training efforts — every day.

The following suggestions will help you establish your role as pack leader and reinforce dog obedience, deferment to your leadership, dog training techniques, and overall attitude and disposition (yours and your dogs).

1. CONSISTENCY

A good habit to have in feeding your dog is consistency. Dogs love routine and food is a very important subject to them.

For example, feed your dog at approximately the same time(s) each day (some modification is fine for weekly schedule changes.) If feeding two times a day, pick two windows of time that you can be consistent with, for example, between 7:00 and 8:00 am and then again between 5:00 and 6:00 pm.

Having a window of time helps prevent anxiety in a dog expecting to be fed at a specific time each day (5:15 pm — yes, dogs can zero in on a specific time of day like 5:15).

This is a very real concern for dogs and some dogs can fall apart emotionally and physically if they are expecting food at that time and don’t get it. Ever hear of the dog that is panting and spastic and throwing up or having diarrhea? This dog is anxious. Setting a window of time and sticking to it will help your dog remain calm. Practice the same routine every day.

2. NO RUNNING BUFFET

A big mistake is to offer up the running buffet, where food is available around the clock. This is actually a pretty common feeding program in many homes because it’s simple for the humans — add food as needed.

So why not do this? Because it leads to an obese, lazy dog who doesn’t listen to your commands, respect your leadership position or adhere to rules you’ve set forth in your dog training.

3. MEALTIME IS DOG TRAINING TIME

Wonderful things happen at mealtime — for you and Fido. You get the opportunity to have your dog perform (reinforcing all that dog training you’ve done) for his meal. This could be sit, down, come, place.

So what, you say? Well, this is the easiest way you have of getting your dog’s affirmation of you being the leader and reinforcing dog training. If you aren’t the leader, guess who is. It will be the demanding, obnoxious dog bossing you around for a meal.

What exactly does it look like? Hold the food bowl in your hand. Your dog may be spastic, jumping, yipping, and pawing at you for the food. This is another dog training opportunity for you — teaching him to be calmer at mealtimes.

State your command once and wait (good to start with a sit, which is usually the easiest). Your dog sits and the bowl of food goes to the floor with praise for a good sit and a release “OK” that they can move to get the food.

When your dog complies with your command, he has just deferred to your leadership in the pack. (When beginning this program, you may need to help your dog with completing his command and praise warmly and then give food.)

Once your dog has the program down, you can introduce other feeders such as spouse, responsible children, etc to gently let your four-footed family member know her position in the pack.

CONCLUSION

By changing your dog’s feeding routine, you change so much more. You get to reinforce all the dog training and dog obedience you’ve worked so hard on — and it feels effortless. You get increased respect from your dog for providing the important commodity of food and for being a consistent provider. The more you establish yourself as leader of the pack, the more your dog will want to please you and dog training will be a snap.

Giving your male dog the right name is very important. You will
want to choose his name well because you and your dog are going
to be companions for a long time. The name you select for your
dog reflects on you, your dog, and your relationship.

Some key considerations when selecting a unique male dog name
are:

* Choose a name that is easy to say and call out, preferably one
or two syllables.

* How does your dog behave? What is his personality? You
wouldn’t name a dog ‘Chaos’ if he was sweet, gentle, and calm.

* What are his breed, coat color, and size? For instance, you
wouldn’t name a Chihuahua “Fluffy” (unless you are into irony).

* What is his purpose? Is he going to be a guard dog, a hunting
dog, or a traditional household pet?

* What is his breed’s origin? For example, if you have a German
Shepherd, consider German male dog names like Fritz. If you have
an Irish Setter, maybe an Irish dog name like Conan or Conner
would suit him.

* Encourage the whole family to take part in naming your dog.

* Give your dog a name that relates to or says something about
your own interests. For instance, if you like to hike and camp,
perhaps “Scout” would be a good name for your dog.

* Pick out several favorite names, then try them on your new dog
for a few days to see what you like and what he seems to respond
to.

* Avoid names that could be confused with standard commands like
“come,” “stay,” etc.

* Finally, do you love the name? After all, you will be saying
it daily (mostly with pleasure, sometimes with exasperation) for
the next 10-plus years.

The food debate

Cat foods have been used by Ferret owners for many years, but there’s a fair bit of debate about which food is best for ferrets, whether high-quality cat/kitten foods are good enough, and so on. The usual conclusion is that while foods designed for cats probably aren’t the best, many of the foods with ferret pictures on the bags weren’t designed for ferrets either — they were designed for mink or cats and maybe modified slightly, and priced twice as high. If you choose a food packaged for ferrets, check its label just as you would a cat food. Recommended quality Ferret specific diets include: Eight in One, Marshall, Sheppard & Greene, as well as Totally Ferret.

Many feel that Ferret specific foods are the best food, however these people also agree that cat/kitten foods are entirely sufficient, and that there’s not that much difference between them.

Kitten or cat food

Many people feed their ferret’s high-quality cat food, such as Iams, Science Diet, or ProPlan. High-quality food may cost a bit more than grocery store brands, but your pet will eat far less and be much healthier. Keep in mind also that an 8-pound bag of dry food can last two ferret’s a couple of months, so the cost of feeding them even high-quality food is not very great.

Because of their high protein requirements, you should feed ferrets three to four years old kitten or “growth” foods. Older ferrets may develop kidney problems if given too much protein, so they should be switched to adult cat formulas.

Soft cat food is not good for ferrets, because it generally contains much less protein than the dry kind and because it isn’t hard enough to rub plaque off their teeth which can lead to tooth decay. However, young kits and those recovering from illness or surgery may need their food moistened at your veterinarian or breeders request. Keep in mind that moistened food spoils much more quickly than the same food left dry, so dump out leftovers every day.

Additional Information

Dog food is NOT acceptable, as it lacks some nutrients ferrets (and cats) need. Among other things, ferrets and cats both need taurine, which is found naturally in poultry; many cat and ferret foods supplement it as well.

Variety and change

In general, feeding your pet a variety of foods, rather than just one brand, may be a good idea. Ferrets are known to be finicky eaters, and if the brand you’ve been using changes or is suddenly unavailable, you could run into problems. To switch from one brand to another, it’s best if you mix them gradually, which should aid in determining what other product(s) your pets will eat, as well as allow the time necessary to successfully complete the process. As your ferret reaches the “half & half” mark, you can slowly decrease and/or eliminate mixing of the two products.

There are many foods that are seemingly harmless to us that can be toxic to your dog. Here is a list that you should remember and teach your children so they know that any of these items can make your dog very sick.

Raisins — Both grapes and raisins can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney failure.

Chocolate — Chocolate contains a caffeine-like substance that can be toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more the effect. If they eat it, they can become excited, have increased urination, muscle tremors, seizures and rapid heart rate.

Sugarless gum — Dogs eat gum every chance they get. Anything with xylitol, a sugar alcohol can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar in dogs. So no gum of any kind for your dog.

Onions — A chemical in onions damages dogs’ blood cells and can cause anemia. One small whole onion may be fatal.

Macadamia Nuts — Never leave these nuts lying around on your coffee table. A compound in them may leave your dog with temporary paralysis in his hind legs.
