Two workers recently lost their lives after falling from a height while they were working on two different Scottish railway bridges. The tragic accidents occurred on the same day with just a few hours separating them.

Robert McDonald, who was employed with the Forth Bridge painting team at the time of the accident, died after falling 150 feet from the ladder, while David Roger, a member of the blasting team at the Tay Bridge, was killed when he fell onto a ledge from a height.

Harry Frew, Regional Secretary for UCATT in Scotland said that the accidents proved construction work continued to be dangerous. He cautioned all employers to keep a vigilant eye on safety mechanisms at the workplace to prevent such tragic accidents.

David Simpson, Network Rail Scotland route director, said the untimely death of McDonald and Roger had shocked the teams working on the Forth and Tay Bridge projects. He said the accident was a rare case because the occurrence of such incidents had been checked by stringent safety measures adopted in the last ten years. He also assured that both the accidents were being investigated in detail.

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) Director of Railway Safety, Ian Prosser, said the department would offer complete moral support to the grieving families of the deceased. He said an enquiry into the Forth bridge accident was already underway, while particulars about the Tay bridge incident were being asked for.
