If someone made a big overbet, they were assumed to be holding cards of their own color - making them not want to see a flop where they were likely to lose. They’d rather win a small pot than risk losing a much bigger one by seeing a bad flop. This was a big game, and all of the players in it gamble regularly at the nosebleed stakes. He was warning against playing only when the cards dictate or rather “being a slave to the cards.” While he advocates that his super tight strategy allows one to go deep in a tourney, it’s not always how you win tourneys. Sometimes you have to make moves, like stealing the blinds on a semibluff drawing hand, or pushing others off hands because of conflicting stack sizes.

All in all though Hellmuth’s run wasn’t too bad. He placed deep enough to Cash in 6 events, and lasted a long time during the WSOP main even, though he didn’t quite make it to the final table. In any event 6 cashes at the WSOP is a strong finish regardless of who you are, be it old pro, or an up and coming hopeful.
