In typical terms, a straddle is a bet made by the player to the immediate left of the big blind, which is typically double the size of the big blind and operates like a third blind. Players must put the straddle on before the cards are dealt in order to be valid. Depending on the game, whether the straddle is ‘live’ or not, the straddling player may or may not have the option to raise when it comes back to him.
One lesser known variation of this concept is known as the ’sleeper straddle.’ This is a blind bet that can be made by anyone at the online poker table from any position after the blinds, though it is only a legal bet if the players between the big blind and that player all fold. If someone enters the pot before reaching the ’sleeper straddling’ player, then the straddle bet is returned and action continues as it would as if there were no straddle. If the players do all fold, then the sleeper straddle is live and works the same way as a regular straddle bet.
